We are committed to ensuring that the deaf community can access health services effectively. An important part of this is to raise awareness of things that might make it difficult for deaf people to get the healthcare they need.
Working with NHS, community and voluntary sector partners, we are planning a large-scale training event to raise awareness of the issues faced by deaf people using the NHS.
Other areas of work include:
- Looking into promotion of online bookings/repeat prescriptions and text as a preferred method of communication
- Working with the Great North Care Record team to explore how we can ensure that deaf patients can use their preferred methods of communication
- Checking to see which practices locally offer visual alerts, in line with the Accessible Information Standards.
